COACHES VS CANCER CLASSIC
-CHICAGO STATE AT TEXAS. The winner advances to the semifinals, where they will take on Michigan State.
-NORTH FLORIDA AT SAINT JOHNS. Saint Johns should cruise through both this and their next game, seeing as how they are in a region with three very weak teams.
-NAVY VS LOYOLA, MD. Winner will most likely face Saint Johns.
-VMI AT OHIO STATE. The Buckeyes are one of the best teams in the country and should role through this one.
-PRINCETON VS LOYOLA, IL. Loyola is one of the better teams in the Horizon League and Princeton is one of the better teams out of the Ivy. A win here will earn them the opportunity to take the floor against a heavyweight. An upset of a top five team isnt likely, but Loyola could have an at-large caliber team and should compete for a little while if they can get past Princeton.
-SOUTH DAKOTA STATE VS KENT STATE. Kent State won the MAC Tournament a season ago, but has to replace a lot of talent. Still, they should have little trouble winning today.
-IUPUI VS ALABAMA A&M. IUPUI appears to be the best team in the MidCon, and should pull out a win today and advance to the semifinals.
BCA INVITATIONAL (Round Robin)
-UTEP VS PENN. UTEP lost a lot of talent off of a pretty good team from last season and is looking to rebuild. This tournament is a chance for them to make a good impression early. Penn is a strong Ivy League team that will likely get to the NCAA Tournament via the automatic bid, but they could do their share of damage in this as well and really improve their potential seed.
-SAINT FRANCIS, NY AT SYRACUSE. The Orange shouldnt have much trouble today, but will face both UTEP and Penn in this tournament, both of whom are capable of giving them a good game. If they can win all three games, it would be a nice start to the season because theyd have two half way decent wins on their resume.
BASKETBALL TRAVELERS CLASSIC AT OLD DOMINION (Round Robin)
-MONMOUTH AT OLD DOMINION. Old Dominion has been a good team out of the Colonial the past two season and could realistically compete for an at large bid this year. Getting off to a 3-0 start with a win over Clemson would certainly be a step in the right direction.
-ARKANSAS STATE VS CLEMSON. Clemson has struggled down the stretch last season, but if they are healthy they could challenge for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Playing well in this tournament will help them out.
BASKETBALL TRAVELERS CLASSIC AT OREGON (Round Robin)
-Portland State vs Cal State Northridge
-Lehigh vs Oregon
Oregon should be able to get off to a 3-0 start with this tournament being on their home floor.JOHN THOMPSON
-Central Connecticut @ Michigan
-North Carolina A&T @ Missouri
-Stetson vs Army
-Davidson vs Eastern Michigan
Michigan and Missouri appear to be the favorites and will likely face each other for the championship.
JIM THORPE CLASSIC
-Howard @ Cincinnati
-High Point vs Tennessee Martin
This is on Cincinnatis home floor, and they should role through this tournament.
BASKETBALL TRAVELERS CLASSIC AT FRESNO STATE
-Winston Salem State vs Fresno State
-South Alabama vs UC Irvine
Getting off to a 3-0 start would be great for Fresno State, who was ineligible for postseason play last year due to being on probation. They have a talented team and should be a force in the WAC, but they want to get off to a good start this season.
It seems to be the philosophy of nearly every single NCAA Tournament caliber team that its best to ease into ones season. Technically, everyone starts off at zero and every game means the same thing for everyone, but one can hypothesize who some of the better teams are going to be as I have done in this article.
-ARKANSAS PINE BLUFF AT AIR FORCE. Air Force has a good team this year who can make a case for the NCAA Tournament, but they have a lot of games against lower caliber teams and cant afford to drop one like this.
-JACKSON STATE AT ALABAMA. One of the best teams from the SWAC takes on one of the best teams from the SEC. An easy win and potentially good RPI game for Alabama once Jackson State gets into conference play.
-SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE AT ARKANSAS. The Razorbacks open their season at home against a very beatable Ohio Valley Conference team, that isnt likely to help their SOS much .
-NEW HAMPSHIRE AT BOSTON COLLEGE. BC is a potential pod team that shouldnt have much trouble getting a win today.
-GEORGE WASHINGTON AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY. Interesting game here. GW was a top ten team a year ago, but was seeded poorly due to a weak schedule. They lost a ton of talent from last years team, but have a chance to beat a fairly decent team on the road today.
-DENVER AT COLORADO. Denver is in rebuilding mode, but if they could pull off this upset it would give them a huge boost at the beginning if the year. Colorado just missed the tournament a year ago and cant afford to drop too many OOC games if they want to be a solid tourney team this year.
-QUINNIPIAC AT CONNECTICUT. Quinnipiac is like a lamb being led to the slaughter in this game. The Huskies should have no problems starting off 1-0.
-SAMFORD AT FLORIDA. Samford is the favorites in the Ohio Valley Conference, is very well coached, and passes the ball very well. Florida is simply too much though. They are the defending national champions with all five starters back on the team, and should contend for a #1 seed.
-SOUTHERN AT GEORGIA. Georgia has a pretty talented team and plays tough defense. They appear to be good enough to play their way into the tournament picture, but they really need to take care of business in games such as this one.
-ELON AT GEORGIA TECH. After two years of rebuilding, the Yellow Jackets appear to be back in the national picture. They definitely appear to be a tournament caliber team and should get off to a 1-0 start today.
-EASTERN WASHINGTON AT GONZAGA. This could be a better game than what many expect. Gonzaga is talented, but will have to adjust to life without Adam Morrison
and J.P. Batista
. Eastern Washington is an up and coming team out of the Big Sky who could give the Zags fits. Gonzaga has been seeded 4th or better for three straight years and a win today would be the first step at getting back their for a fourth year. With first/second round games being played in Spokane, they have a lot to play for as far as being able to be placed there.
-HILLSDALE AT MARQUETTE. The Golden Eagles have a very solid team this year and begin their season against a nondiv1 team that they will likely blow out.
-MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE AT MISSISSIPPI. The Andy Kennedy era gets underway at Ole Miss. He did a tremendous job as interim head coach last season at Cincinnati, so look to see significant improvement in the Rebels this year.
-ALASKA ANCHORAGE AT NEVADA. Nevada begins the season ranked in the top 25 and deservedly so. They are definitely a tournament caliber team and should have little trouble against div2 Alaska Anchorage tonight.
-WOFFORD AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE. The Wolfpack enter the post Herb Sendek era. They should have little trouble getting off to a 1-0 start against Wofford tonight.
-IPFW AT NOTRE DAME. The Irish have missed the tournament the last two years. They need to begin the season strong. The sooner they begin building their resume the better. They certainly dont want a loss such as this on it.
-NORFOLK STATE AT OKLAHOMA. The Sooners should breeze through this and begin the season 1-0.
-FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT OKLAHOMA STATE. The Cowboys missed the NCAA Tournament last season, but have a very experienced team coming back and should be in the picture this year. Expect them to role to a 1-0 start in this one.
-SOUTH CAROLINA STATE AT SOUTH CAROLINA. The Gamecocks have won the NIT two consecutive seasons. They need to start playing as well at the beginning and middle of the year as they do at the end of the year. That way they could build up a resume worthy of being selected for the NCAA Tournament. They shouldnt have too much trouble winning tonight.
-WASHINGTON (MO) AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. Southern Illinois is definitely a top 25 caliber team and potentially a strong NCAA Tournament team. They begin their season tonight against a div2 team that theyll likely blow out. The Salukis did drop a game to div2 Alaska Anchorage early in the year last year. They really need to avoid a similar start this season.
-MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE AT TENNESSEE. The Vols improved dramatically last season and will once again be a strong team this year. Middle Tennessee is a fairly decent team out of the Sun Belt, but they shouldnt be much of a match for Tennessee, who could compete for the pod system once again.
-PRAIRIE VIEW A&M AT TEXAS A&M. The Aggies are a top 25 team who could compete for a spot in the pod system. They should breeze past Prairie View tonight.
-HAWAII AT UNLV. Both of these teams have been on the outside looking in the past few seasons when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. Both teams appear to be capable of making a run at it this year. This appears to be one of the more competitive games of the day. A win would certainly be a nice way to start the season for either team.
-MOUNT SAINT MARYS AT WEST VIRGINIA. West Virginia has been a solid team the past two seasons, but they lost a ton of talent from last years squad and could be in a rebuilding year. Still, they should be able to win this one fairly easily.
