#2) Michael Porter, 6'10, Forward, 18.0 years old, United States

EWA: 1.4
PER: 38.4
TS%: 61.8%
15.8 PTS, 5.6 REB, 2.4 AST, 1.8 STL, 1.0 BLK, 2.0 OREB, 6-20 3P%, 53.3 FG%

Michael Porter Jr. was another integral piece for the gold medal U.S. squad in Chile, posting per 40 averages of 30 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. At 6'10, with a 7-foot wingspan Porter has unique physical tools for an 18-year-old that can be slotted into either forward position. Porter is a fluid and long athlete, who looks very comfortable running the floor in transition, getting out in space, and finishing above the rim, as demonstrated with some highlight reel finishes throughout the tournament. Porter can impact the game in the half court as well, knocking down shots from beyond the arc, as well as showing nice touch on one and two dribble pull ups and runners. Porter can make some plays off the bounce, but at this point is most effective on straight line drives, using his length and athleticism to get to the rim. Porter won't graduate until 2017, and is heading into his senior season at Nathan Hale High school in Seattle where he will be under the guidance of new head coach, Brandon Roy. He has already committed to the University of Washington, and looks to have the makings of a one and done lottery pick.

Michael Porter Jr, 6-10 SF/PF, Father Tolton, MO, 2017 Class, Uncommitted

Strengths
-Nice combination of tools for a combo forward – measured 6' 10” in shoes with a 7' 0.5” wingspan and a 9' 0” standing reach, very good for a combo forward. Thin with an average frame, especially in his lower body, but he's done a solid job of filling out his upper body. Now 212 pounds, up nine pounds since the USA Basketball Development Camp in October.
-Fluid athlete who plays above the rim with ease in space.
-Uses his fluidity to get out in transition. Can grab and go or fill the lanes. Opportunistic scorer in the open court.
-Soft touch on his jumper that can extend out to 3-point range. Elevates, gets good rotation, not bothered by hand contests. Still extending his range with consistency but he shows great potential – 86% from the free throw line in 27 Nike EYBL games. Good footwork on 1-2 dribble pull ups. Can make off balance pull ups.
-Can straight line drive from the perimeter
-Likes to fly in on the offensive glass. Uses his fluidity, leaping ability and reach to keep plays alive. Shows impressive instincts on the defensive glass as well – 14.0 rebounds per 40 minutes in 27 career Nike EYBL games.
-Sharp instincts in the passing lanes. Nice timing rotating for blocks. Quick off his feet.

Weaknesses
-Good not great frame, especially in his lower body. Rail thin legs – skinny ankles, calves and thighs. Has historically measured average in the length department – 6' 10.5” wingspan last October.
-Physicality comes and goes. Not the most durable player. Can improve his ability to play through contact. Gets knocked off course on straight line drives, forcing him to settle for tough runners.
-Has potential as a shooter but is a bit slow getting to his release. Employs a full body dip before rising up into his shot. Shoots on the way down at times. 28-for-87 from three (32%) in EYBL.
-Can improve his handle, especially with his off hand. Has the skill set of a perimeter four man at this stage. Struggles to create versus pressure.
-Has some vision but isn't always the most willing passer. Will force up contested jumpers rather than moving the ball.
-Light on his feet but struggles to sit down in a stance and keep quicker wings in front. Lacks the physicality to defend the post consistently.

Outlook Porter has a very unique blend of tools and skills that translate quite well to today's NBA. At 6' 10” he can grab and go in transition, space the floor, attack in a straight line and finish above the rim in space. He also shows flashes on the glass and as a defensive playmaker. Porter, whose father recently accepted a job on the University of Washington coaching staff, has to get stronger, fine-tune his offensive skills, and improve as a 1-on-1 defender, but he's most certainly an intriguing long-term prospect with one-and-done potential.

Michael Porter, 6' 8.5”, SF/PF, Columbia, MO, Class of 2017

Mike Schmitz

Strengths
-Nice size for a wing at around 6'9” in shoes
-Has added eight pounds (now 203 lbs) since the Nike Academy in June. Still a bit thin but his frame is definitely improving.
-Outstanding fluidity for a player his size. Really smooth. Good body control. Glides in transition.
-Explosive leaper who plays above the rim with ease. Catches lobs.
-Polished skill set and IQ.
-Can grab a rebound and go coast to coast. Uses his long strides and athleticism to straight line drive in the half court. Strong first step. Tougher attacking the basket than he gets credit for.
-Really smooth shooting stroke. Nice base. Good rise on his jumper. Can make spot threes but prefers to shoot it off the bounce. Loves hesitation pull ups. Able to create space with step backs – not something you often see from a player his size.
-Showed some ability to defend the perimeter. Not completely proven in that area but he did get down in a stance and move his feet well while defending wings.
-Good instincts on the glass. Not much of a banger but has a nose for the ball, especially on the offensive glass.

Weaknesses
-Frame is improving, but he's still fairly thin for a combo forward. Shoulders aren't all that wide. Very thin legs. How much bigger will he get?
-Doesn't have great length relative to his height (6' 10.5” wingspan)
-Not a great ball handler at this stage. Can attack in a straight line or handle in transition, but he struggles a bit versus pressure. Doesn't change direction or speeds all that well.
-Can improve his ability to finish through contact
-Gets swallowed up in the paint at times on defense/the glass.
-Fairly right-hand dominant around the rim
-Still has to prove himself as a perimeter defender
-A year old for his class

Outlook: The coach's son possesses a very impressive blend of size, fluidity, explosiveness, shooting touch, and basketball IQ/instincts that's going to make him a marquee player at whatever school he decides to attend. Porter figures to have major success as a face-up power forward at the college level, but the key for his NBA stock will be making the transition to the small forward spot, especially given his frame and average length. Improving his perimeter defense and handle will be key, but Porter is well ahead of the curve skill wise for most players in his class.

Despite measuring 6-7 ½ without shoes, Michael Porter is without a doubt a perimeter player, showing a tremendous skill-level handling the ball, shooting from outside and scoring from all over the court. He's a very fluid athlete who will take time to fill out physically, weighing just 193 pounds at the moment, but has a very impressive combination of size, skills and smarts for a 16-year old.
