Reebok Eurocamp Summary, Part One

For the second straight year, Jaka Klobucar shrugged off an average season in Olimpia Ljubljana to post an extremely impressive Eurocamp performance. Klobucar was one of the camp’s top performers from a statistical standpoint, making a big impact in nearly every game he played in, while shooting the ball far better than he had over the course of the year.

Klobucar is a solid athlete by European standards, putting the ball on the floor down nicely to create shots both for himself and others throughout the week. He made shots an excellent rate, knocking down catch and shoot 3-pointers at will, even pulling up smoothly off the dribble after a sharp crossover on one occasion. His court vision looks solid as he dished out a number of impressive lefty passes, and he also did a nice job moving off the ball looking for open spaces. Klobucar played intense defense from time to time, but is severely limited by his extremely poor wingspan. He has been criticized at times in his home country for a certain lack of mental and physical toughness, but he seems to be improving in these areas. Although his body of work is pretty small if you look at his international career and the fact that he’s already draft-eligible, he may have caught someone’s eye enough in Treviso to warrant being selected somewhere late in the second round, which was certainly not the case going in.

One of the most solid performers in the EuroCamp, Klobucar perhaps doesn’t enjoy big-time potential, but he should evolve into a very nice shooting guard in the European scene. For starters, he’s an excellent shooter. Left-handed, he’s really fast in the release and shows beautiful mechanics, really consistent in the form. He’s nicely effective in the catch and shoot, either from standstill positions or coming off a cutter, or pulling up off the dribble.

But even if we could label him as a shooter, he’s not strictly a specialist, but can put the ball on the floor with decent handles, passes the rock pretty well and shows a very nice understanding of the game. He’s just a smart player who knows how to play the game. Enjoying nice size for his position and decent athleticism, he just needs to get some strength to easier operate on the floor, although he could also use an extra degree of aggressiveness on defense. He shined in the final day of the camp, especially in the first game he played, collecting 15 points (4/9 FG, 3/6 3P), 4 rebounds and 3 assists, delivering also in the match against the French U-20 squad with 13 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists, although he struggled with his accuracy (4/12 FG, 2/7 3P).

The second offensive reference on his team, Klobucar is another example of the physically immature perimeter players that are so common to find in the Slovenian youth teams. The characteristics of this left-handed wing don’t jump out at you immediately, but he’s a smart and skilled player. Not a great prospect from the physical side, he’s about 6-5, skinny and relatively athletic (not by NBA standards, though). A quick player and a solid ball-handler, he can attack his matchups looking for the layup, the dish or the mid-range jumper. His most dangerous weapon right now is precisely his shot. He has excellent mechanics and shows very good range, enjoying the ability to easily shoot off the dribble or on step-backs. He topped the individual scoring performances by knocking down 44 points on Lithuania. Also a reliable defender, he shows good lateral quickness, and only the lack of strength limits his effectiveness. Born in 1987, for the moment he’s a nice prospect for European basketball.
