David Noel NBA Draft Scouting Report

May 24, 2006, 03:19 pm
Strengths
Noel is a terrific athlete and the consummate role player. He has great strength, excellent leaping ability and outstanding hands. Noel does what the coach tells him, executes well, plays hard and shows a high basketball IQ. He is an excellent defender and possesses strong leadership skills. Most of his damage offensively comes within 16 feet and in, but he expanded his game out to the perimeter more this year and did a good job knocking down open looks with his feet set.

Weaknesses
Noel is a bit stuck between positions as far as the NBA is concerned. He played power forward for most of his college career, but in terms of size is more of a shooting guard or small forward. He is a little too bulky and could stand to shed some weight (mostly muscle) to help him become quicker and more effective defending the perimeter. His ball-handling skills are poor, and he cannot create his own shot effectively. He’s a bit mechanical and relies more of his strength and tenacity at the college level rather than a finesse game.

Outlook
Noel’s chances of being drafted aren’t great without an excellent performance at the Orlando pre-draft camp (if he’s invited), but he could find his way onto an NBA roster as a defensive oriented glue-guy.

The one contributing holdover from last year's tourney team, David Noel isn't quite the prospect that Terry and Hansbrough are, but he is certain to get some NBA interest this spring nonetheless. Noel is as strong a wing as you will find in this tournament, and combined with his leaping ability and body control it is easy to see why many had him pegged for a professional football career coming out of high school. He's a bit of a tweener on the basketball court, more comfortable using his explosiveness around the basket than playing the traditional wing role. Nonetheless, he does have range out to the college 3-point line and could end up as a defense-oriented role-player at the next level.
