Rocky Mountain Revue Day 3

Game One: Philadelphia 76ers 88 , Chicago Bulls 77

Philadelphia

Louis Amundson
14 Points, 6 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 2 Blocks, 1 Turnover, 3 Fouls, 6-9 FG, 2-7 FT

-Amundson played a typical game by his standards, getting on the glass and making plays with by working hard.
-Amundson still seems to be hampered by his ankle injury and came up hobbling early in the second quarter. The fact that Amundson kept playing injured in a Summer League game is a testament to his competitiveness and toughness.
-Amundson did a good job of getting position underneath, but shot poorly from the line which is concerning. It appeared that Amundson had found his stroke at the line in Vegas, but his improvements may not have been as vast as they appeared.

Thaddeus Young
4 Points, 3 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 2 Steals, 1 Block, 2 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 2-11 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0-3 FT

-Young had a tough game on the offensive end, but made some nice plays defensively.
-Young has the athleticism to be a great defender, and is versatile enough to play both inside and outside.
-Young made some rookie mistakes offensively, forcing drives straight into defenders on three possessions. His shot wasn’t falling either, so this game was a wash for him offensively.

Louis Williams
31 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 8 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 10-16 FG, 0-2 3FG, 11-16 FT

-Williams is unstoppable in this setting, as his athleticism, ball handling skills, and offensive game are tailor made for success in the Summer League.
-Williams proved to be almost unstoppable off the dribble, and beat his man off the dribble repetitively. This allowed him to get to the line at will, where he shot a very solid percentage.
-Williams didn’t show NBA range on his jump shot today, but knocked in a couple from just inside of the arch.

Jason Smith
11 Points, 5 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 3 Blocks, 2 Fouls, 3-7 FG, 5-7 FT

-Smith looked a whole lot more comfortable during this game than he did during most of his games in Vegas.
-Smith knocked down a couple of catch and shoot jumpers from just inside the NCAA three-point line, which is an encouraging sign since he has struggled from the field recently.
-Smith isn’t entirely ready to handle minutes at the power forward spot for the 76ers, but he does create enough matchup problems to be effective immediately against certain teams. Smith’s ability to take larger players outside should help him a great deal as he gets his range back.

Bobby Jones
15 Points, 5 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 1 Steal, 1 Foul, 5-10 FG, 1-3 3FG, 4-7 FT

-Jones played a solid game today, not making many mistakes on either end of the floor.
-Jones made a couple of deep jump shots, and has improved that part of his game since last season. His form is somewhat mechanical, but the results are hard to argue with. Jones’s willingness to step out at shoot three’s led to him beating JamesOn Curry off the dribble for a nice layup when Curry tried to close him out hard.
-Jones got out in transition, and got his teammates involved well on the secondary break.

Derrick Byars
6 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Fouls, 2-6 FG, 0-1 3FG, 2-2 FT

-Byars didn’t have a spectacular game, but didn’t have a lot of opportunities.
-Byars has very solid athleticism, and he works hard on the glass. He has proven to be a very solid rebounder for his size, and his toughness makes him a capable defender.
-Byars is still trying to find his stroke on the offensive end, and will need to improve his consistency from the perimeter if he wants to see time in Philadelphia.

Chicago

Thabo Sefolosha
4 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 4 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 1-8 FG, 0-1 3FG, 2-4 FT

-Sefolosha had a rough game from the floor, being asked to play the point and shoulder the offensive load for Chicago at the same time.
-Sefolosha got open looks, but just wasn’t feeling it today.
-Sefolosha has a very refined floor game, but shouldn’t be asked to play point guard without another NBA caliber scorer on the floor.

Aaron Gray
8 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Blocks, 1 Turnover, 3 Fouls, 4-9 FG

-Gray did a half-way decent job today, showing some versatility on offense.
-Gray got strong position today, earning himself two dunks by getting tough inside.
-Gray showed some range as well, hitting a 20 footer, which is something that Chicago could use from him right away.

Lance Williams
13 Points, 4 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 4 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 5-8 FG, 3-3 FT

-Williams had a great first half, but disappeared in the second half.
-Williams is a bruiser with an inconsistent mid range game. He was knocking down his shots today, and it allowed him to put up pretty decent numbers.
-Williams would be view significantly more favorably if he could do what he did tonight on a regular basis.

Thomas Gardner
18 Points, 5 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Steal, 1 Turnover, 2 Fouls, 8-16 FG, 0-5 3FG, 2-2 FT

-Gardner really got after things on the offensive end during this game.
-Gardner’s jumper doesn’t have consistent range, but he is capable of hitting shots from outside of the NCAA three-point line. However, he is much more apt at finishing from in close off the dribble.
-Gardner is trying to take advantage of his opportunity on this team by running the floor hard and trying to display his abilities.

JamesOn Curry
15 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 3 Steals, 1 Turnover, 3 Fouls, 7-16 FG, 0-1 3FG, 1-1 FT

-Curry played a very solid game today, making an impression on both ends of the floor.
-Curry showed some playmaking ability with his decisions with the ball today while shooting the ball with range at a very solid clip.
-Curry played very good defense, forcing his man into his help defense and getting his hands on the ball.

Boo Davis
10 Points, 2 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 2 Steals, 3 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 4-9 FG, 1-2 3FG, 1-2 FT

-Davis gets recognized here from playing a lot better than he did in his last outing.
-Davis shot the ball surprisingly well from the outside, and showed above average court vision by getting into the lane and making a tough pass to a cutting teammate for a dunk.

Game Two: Atlanta Hawks 83, Dallas Mavericks 77

Atlanta

Acie Law IV
24 Points, 6 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 4 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 6-8 FG, 12-13 FT

-Law did an admirable tonight, considering he was going up against a very talented player in Jose Juan Barea.
-Law already handles himself like a veteran on the court, controlling the game from the point guard position and getting himself going from the field in the flow of the offense.
-Law didn’t show NBA range on his jumper today, but he made a handful of very tough shots from outside of the NCAA three-point line.
-Law isn’t Jason Kidd on the boards, but his length allows him to grab rebounds that other guards wouldn’t be able to.

Solomon Jones
8 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 2 Blocks, 2 Turnovers, 6 Fouls, 4-8 FG

-Jones isn’t afraid to dunk the ball in traffic, and he showed that on three occasions tonight.
-Jones doesn’t have much offensive ability outside of 8 feet at this point, but showed nice touch today on the only midrange jump shot he took.
-Jones still needs to refine his post game if he wants to be an effective offensive player, and added bulk would make him a much more formidable rebounder.

Devin Green
9 Points, 5 Rebounds, 1 Turnover, 2 Fouls, 2-9 FG, 1-5 3FG, 4-4 FT

-Green showed a lot of imagination in creating his shots tonight, but overdoes things on occasion.
-Green showed good range on one play, hitting a three, and then tossed up an airball from the same range on a subsequent possession.
-Green’s ability to get separation is useful, but he needs to improve his shooting consistency to take full advantage of it.

Shelden Williams
20 Points, 9 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 3 Steals, 3 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 6-12 FG, 8-11 FT

-Williams seems like he has lost a little bit of weight and improved his conditioning.
-Williams is a monster on the glass, and doesn’t give up anything easy to his man defensively at all. He pushed Pops Mensah-Bonsu off of the block when the two were matched up, which is no easy task. He also got his hands on a number of lose balls down low.
-Williams showed good post moves, including a turnaround jump shot and a right handed hook.

Dallas

Jose Juan Barea
15 Points, 4 Rebounds, 8 Assists, 2 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 5-12 FG, 0-3 3FG, 5-6 FT

-Barea has been fantastic in every game he has played in this summer.
-Barea wasn’t hitting his outside shots today, but proved to be an extremely capable finisher around the rim. He can finish with either hand, and does a great job of not getting his shot blocked by using his body and putting the ball high off the glass.
-Barea did a tremendous job distributing the ball as always, and was really trying to push his teammates late in the game.

Maurice Ager
16 Points, 2 Rebounds, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 6-14 FG, 1-4 3FG, 3-4 FT

-Ager didn’t shoot the ball particularly well in the second half, but he put together a very nice first half.
-Ager’s jump shot has been looking good in recent, but he needs to be more conservative with his shot selection.
-Ager hasn’t shown a great deal of versatility this summer, and will need to work on his ball handling skills and court vision if he wants to get meaningful playing time in Dallas.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu
6 Points, 8 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 2 Blocks, 2 Turnovers, 6 Fouls, 3-6 FG

-Mensah-Bonsu found himself with a very tough matchup tonight in Shelden Williams, and had a hard time displaying his athleticism.
-Mensah-Bonsu couldn’t push Williams around, which made it tough for him to get on the offensive glass. In the same respect, he often found himself shooting turnaround jumpers when Williams didn’t give him space to make a move to the rim.
-Mensah-Bonsu did show some tremendous defensive abilities, and made Williams work for everything he got on the defensive end.

Brandon Bass
13 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Steals, 2Blocks, 4 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 6-9 FG, 1-2 FT

-Bass is a load to handle in the paint, and was able to get what he wanted on the inside tonight.
-Bass hit one especially nice 17 foot jump shot, which would be a very handy tool for him if he can develop it.
-Bass worked hard on the defensive end, and his a lot more success against Shelden Williams than any of Dallas’ other post players.

Nick Fazekas
12 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Steals, 1 Block, 4 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 3-7 FG, 1-3 3FG, 5-6 FT

-Fazekas finally showed his range today, hitting more than one deep jumper for the first time in quite a while,
-Fazekas looked better on the whole today, getting an easy dunk and getting to the line at a high rate.
-Fazekas is going to need to find his stroke if he wants to do his job in Dallas and hit open jump shots from the perimeter.

Game Three: Utah Jazz 71, San Antonio Spurs 75

Utah

Paul Millsap
20 Points, 14 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Blocks, 6 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 8-14 FG, 4-4 FT

-Millsap didn’t play huge minutes, but had a major impact on this game.
-Millsap was dominant on the offensive glass, grabbing his own misses on two occasions before finishing with layups.
-Millsap has great timing when going after blocks, and is very good at rebounding out of his area on the defensive end.
-Millsap showed tremendous end to end speed tonight, getting out on the break with Dee Brown on a few occasions.

Dee Brown
9 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 1 Steal, 3 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 4-7 FG, 1-2 FT

-Brown played a solid game today, but didn’t see a lot minutes.
-Brown used his tremendous speed to push the break and create easy looks for his teammates.
-Brown did show the ability to create the break himself, getting a big steal at the end of the first half for an assist after scoring a layup himself on the previous possession.

Rafael Araujo
6 Points, 3 Rebounds, 1 Block, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 2-3 FG, 2-2 FT

-Araujo struggled today, having a hard time hanging onto the ball in the paint.
-Araujo is strong, but he doesn’t use it as well around the rim as he could. He didn’t get great position tonight, and kept fighting the ball up through the defense instead of using his bulk to create baskets.
-Araujo did hit a nice 18 foot jumper, and could be improving from the midrange.

Morris Almond
4 Points, 2 Rebounds, 3 Fouls, 2-10 FG

-Almond had a hard time getting his shot off tonight, as he was marked by a San Antonio defender for the duration of the game.
-Almond did hit one nice midrange jumper, but needs to get better separation on the perimeter if he wants to score efficiently.
-Almond isn’t a freak athlete, and needs to learn how to use his teammates to get open, a skill he will only develop with experience. Late in the game, Almond did show the ability to get to the rim using a quick crossover and spin move.

Matt Lojeski
6 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Steal, 3 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 2-4 FG, 1-3 3FG, 1-2 FT

-Lojeski played a solid all-around game today.
-Lojeski has great range from the outside, and has a ton of arch on his jump shot. He didn’t get many open looks from deep tonight, but he did hit his only open three.
-Lojeski has surprising athleticism and can make an impact in a number of ways on the floor.

Levon Kendall
6 Points, 2 Rebounds, 2 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 2-2 FG, 2-4 FT

-Kendall has the look of an NBA player, but needs to address the gaps in his game.
-Kendall isn’t as strong with the ball as he needs to be, and simply needs to keep the ball higher when in the post.
-Kendall has a nice stroke from the perimeter, showing range out to the NCAA three-point line tonight.
-Kendall will be joining the Canadian national team to compete in the FIBA Americas Tournament.

Kyrylo Fesenko
9 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 2 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 3-5 FG, 3-5 FT

-Fesenko had a very good game considering his lack of experience in this setting.
-Fesenko has surprising athleticism for a man of his size, and gets up and down the floor better than comparably sized players.
-Fesenko had one really nice dunk off a his own miss from the free throw line, showing good explosiveness.

San Antonio

Marcus Williams
4 Points, 1 Rebound, 2 Assists, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 2-6 FG, 0-2 FT

-Williams performed significantly better today than he did during his tenure in Vegas.
-Williams played good defense against Morris Almond, forcing him to fadeaway on his first three shot attempts.
-Williams didn’t show a great deal on the offensive end, but still got his fair share off of points from around the rim.

Pooh Jeter
16 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Steals, 2 Turnovers, 1 Foul, 4-8 FG, 8-8 FT

-Jeter was the primary reason that San Antonio won this game, coming up huge in the fourth quarter.
-Jeter shot the ball exceptionally well, and got to the line at will.
-Jeter has very solid court vision, and threw two great one handed push passes to cutting teammates for assists.
-Jeter isn’t the most selfish player, but he could still stand to give the ball up more often.

CJ Watson
17 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Turnovers, 1 Foul, 6-8 FG, 1-1 3FG, 4-5 FT

-Watson looked very good today shooting the ball, and came through with a very solid all around performance.
-Watson didn’t get into the lane off the dribble very frequently, which is something he needs to work on given his caliber as a shooter.
-Watson plays smart, and is a very steady player on this level.

Rich Melzer
10 Points, 3 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 6 Steals, 1 Block, 2 Turnovers, 6 Fouls, 3-10 FG, 1-2 3FG, 3-5 FT

-Melzer is a good player, but an even better teammate. You can constantly hear Melzer giving advice off the bench, and really knows how to work officials.
-Melzer has a lot of experience, and knows how to get open. He is also a savvy defender, knowing how to use his body and hands equally effectively down low.
-Melzer has a fluid jumper with NBA-range, and he hit a handful of shots from deep tonight.

Keith Langford
10 Points, 2 Assists, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 1 Foul, 2-6 FG, 6-10 FT

-Langford played a solid game today, putting together a very balanced performance.
-Langford is an active defender, but isn’t a good enough athlete to shut his man down consistently.
-Langford got to the line well on the offensive end, and does a good job of drawing contact off the dribble drive.
