Rocky Mountain Revue Day 4

Game One: Atlanta Hawks 79 , Chicago Bulls 85

Atlanta

Solomon Jones
11 Points, 3 Rebounds, 1 Block, 1 Steal, 3 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 5-6 FG, 1-1 FT

-Jones played well today, showing some development in his game.
-Jones knocked down two nice jumpers, the farthest of which was 16 feet from the basket. If Jones can continue to improve his consistency in this facet of the game, he could really become an asset to the Hawks.
-Jones finished well at the rim once again, but also made his presence felt on the defensive end. His size and length make him a good shot blocker, and he had a steal that required good court awareness, something that he didn’t have a lot of last year.

Acie Law IV
7 Points, 9 Assists, 3 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 3-7 FG, 1-2 FT

-Law didn’t look for his shot as much as he did yesterday, but did a great job of moving the ball.
-Law did an admirable job of finding his teammates, and had one highlight reel pass where he drove to the baseline and jumped out of bounds to find Shelden Williams camping out in front of the rim for a dunk.
-Law shot the ball well, but didn’t venture outside of his range for the second straight game.
-Law did a decent job defensively, but shows a lack of discipline when his man takes him off the dribble. This part of Law’s game will only improve with experience.

Shelden Williams
20 Points, 5 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 2 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 8-18 FG, 4-5 FT

-Williams didn’t have as good of a game as he did yesterday, but still put on a good show.
-Williams had a tough time posting up Aaron Gray, but still managed to capitalize around the basket.
-Williams showed some nice range, hitting a jumper from the NCAA three-point line. He is improving as catch-and-shoot option from the outside, which will make him almost interchangeable with Al Horford in high-low sets.

Terrance Thomas
11 Points, 9 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 2 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 4-11 FG, 3-4 FT

-Thomas played a good game today, using his bulk to get on the glass.
-Thomas is undersized for a power forward, but is versatile enough to make an impact outside of the paint.
-Thomas isn’t going to wow anyone with his game, but he can do a lot of things on the floor considering his lack of elite physical traits.

Craig Bradshaw
9 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Steal, 4 Fouls, 4-11 FG, 3-4 FT

-Bradshaw gets mention here for putting together a solid stat line.
-Bradshaw works extremely hard to get position on the block offensively, but isn’t big enough to be effective from that position at this point. His lack of bulk hurts him on the defensive end too, and made it difficult for him to push Shelden Williams off his spot.
-Bradshaw showed some solid post skills, but doesn’t have the moves or athleticism to make major contributions from the block offensively.

Chicago

Thabo Sefolosha
7 Points, 3 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Block, 1 Turnover, 1 Foul, 1-6 FG, 0-1 3FG, 5-8 FT

-Sefolosha had a rough game from the floor for the second straight game and didn’t play many minutes.
-Sefolosha made some contributions running the point, but didn’t seem too enthusiastic about how things were playing out on the floor.
-Sefolosha has taken a big step forward this offseason, and should become a contributor in Chicago if he can find his shot in training camp.

Aaron Gray
15 Points, 7 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Blocks, 1 Steal, 3 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 5-5 FG, 5-8 FT

-Gray came through with a strong performance in this game, showing some nice moves from down low.
-Gray is a load on the block for smaller post players, and knocked down right-handed hooks over Shelden Williams on two occasions.
-Gray showed nice court vision, tossing a nice hook pass to a teammate making a backdoor cut. He is still developing his feel for the game, but he has looked noticeably better in this setting than he did in many of his games on the college level.

Justin Cage
8 Points, 1 Rebound, 2 Assists, 1 Block, 3 Fouls, 2-3 FG, 4-5 FT

-Cage earns mention here based on the fact that he has shown huge improvements in his perimeter game.
-Cage didn’t get many touches on the perimeter in college, but had some nice drives to the basket along with some nice footwork during this contest.
-Cage gets great elevation on his jumper, but needs to continue honing his shot from deep.
-Cage’s athleticism allows him to be successful even though he is still adapting to a new position, indicating that he has clearly done the work to make this transition a smooth one.

Thomas Gardner
10 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 3 Fouls, 3-9 FG, 1-5 3FG, 3-4 FT

-Gardner didn’t have as good a game from the floor as he did yesterday, but that was due largely to a lack of assertiveness on the offensive end.
-Gardner did have his moments, taking the ball to the basket with a purpose and getting to the line.
-Gardner showed a good left hand, and is a very capable finisher around the rim.

JamesOn Curry
11 Points, 1 Rebound, 2 Assists, 5 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 3-5 FG, 0-1 3FG, 5-6 FT

-Curry didn’t have a spectacular game numbers wise, but he did show some nice moves offensively.
-Curry had one very impressive play, where he utilized an up and under move to get an easy layup.
-Curry also showed a nice step back jumper that is an asset to him when he is feeling it from the floor.

Boo Davis
14 Points, 1 Assist, 4 Steals, 1 Turnover, 5-9 FG, 2-3 3FG, 2-2 FT

-Davis has found his groove here in Salt Lake City.
-Davis was way off on his first three-point attempt, but proceeded to hit his next two and a pull up from just inside of the arch.
-Davis showed good anticipation, snatching a lazy pass and throwing down a flashy dunk on the other end.
-Davis had one other dunk, which came off of a great back door cut.

Game Two: San Antonio Spurs 86, Philadelphia 76ers 98

San Antonio

James White
20 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 6 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 5-10 FG, 2-3 3FG, 8-10 FT

-White put on a great performance, showing how much more he is than just a spectacular athlete.
-White knocked down two threes, and has a compact shooting stroke that he is still refining.
-White had a could of great finishes, showing great hang time, but his best play was a one-handed no-look pass which he threaded through two defenders.

Marcellus Sommerville
15 Points, 1 Rebound, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 7-10 FG, 1-2 3FG

-Sommerville has an immaculate jump shot, and got hot from the floor early in this one.
-Sommerville is a great scorer when his shot is falling, and scored 10 points in the first 7 minutes of action.
-Sommerville is a decent athlete and has some versatility, but needs to become a more balanced player on both sides of the floor.

CJ Watson
15 Points, 2 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 2 Steals, 2 Fouls, 7-16 FG, 1-3 3FG

-Watson played another great game, scoring his points in a variety of ways.
-Watson is the type of player that knows what he needs to do to get into the flow of the offense, hitting his first shot, a three pointer, and then taking his man off the dribble on subsequent possessions.
-Watson finished well around the rim, and showed solid range on his pull up jumper going in either direction.
-Watson is one of the most consistent players of this year’s Summer League.

Philadelphia

Louis Amundson
17 Points, 9 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Steals, 4 Blocks, 1 Turnover, 6 Fouls, 8-12 FG, 1-2 FT

-Amundson has been relentless in every contest he’s played in this summer, and this was no exception.
-Amundson made things extremely difficult for San Antonio’s guards around the rim, showing incredible timing by blocking four shots.
-Amundson showed his usual finishing skills, but also hit an 18 foot jumper, something that isn’t part of his typical offensive arsenal.

Louis Williams
24 Points, 1 Rebound, 6 Assists, 3 Steals, 2 Blocks, 3 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 8-16 FG, 3-6 3FG, 5-6 FT

-Williams played a great all around game today, and showed some things on defense that were extremely impressive.
-Williams had 2 blocks, one of which was on a weakside rotation in transition. Williams’ used his leaping ability to send the shot back towards half court, and made a truly spectacular play.
-Williams shot the ball well, hitting one three that was about two steps behind the top of the three-point arch.
-Williams has earned some minutes in this upcoming season, and should be considered a legitimate backup point guard for the 76ers.

Thaddeus Young
18 Points, 7 Rebounds, 4 Assists, 3 Steals, 3 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 8-19 FG, 2-4 FT

-Young had a very nice game tonight, showing what he can do right away for the 76ers.
-Young used his athleticism and size to get on the offensive glass, and came away with a few tips in, including one thunderous tip dunk.
-Young also showed a solid floater, which he can get off with very little trouble going towards the basket.
-Young’s game still needs to be refined, but he’s shown all the signs you’d look for from a future talent.

Jason Smith
13 Points, 1 Rebound, 1 Assist, 2Blocks, 2 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 5-11 FG, 3-5 FT

-Smith finally showed some intensity during this game, taking the ball to the basket with a purpose.
-Smith tried to dunk everything, finishing twice and getting to the line on both of his other two attempts.
-Smith made one very nice offensive read, cutting backdoor after setting a ball screen before getting rewarded with a great pass and an easy basket.

Bobby Jones
15 Points, 6 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 1 Block, 5 Turnovers, 6 Fouls, 3-4 FG, 9-11 FT

-Jones was very active today, playing well in all facets of the game, but still made some mistakes.
-Jones didn’t start the game with a lot of momentum, but really got going from the free throw line late. Jones is the type of tough player that won’t hesitate to take it to a defender in the paint.
-Jones made some bad passes, but also displayed good court vision in transition. Many of his turnovers came off of passes that were good ideas, but just didn’t work out.

Game Three: Utah Jazz 102, Seattle Sonics 88

Utah

Paul Millsap
22 Points, 9 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 2 Steals, 2 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 7-14 FG, 8-9 FT

-Millsap turned in another great performance, showing a true knack for being in the right place at the right time.
-Millsap is a rebounding machine, and it seems like the ball is always in his hands off the rim.
-Millsap showed good touch on a 9 foot turnaround, but got most of his offense around the rim and at the line.

Dee Brown
10 Points, 4 Rebounds, 10 Assists, 1 Steal, 4 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 5-7 FG

-Brown really came to play today, notching a double-double.
-Brown was very creative with his passes today, drawing defenders and getting his teammates open using his dribble.
-Brown used his speed to create a few baskets for himself in transition, but also displayed consistent range on his jump shot out to the NBA three-point line.

Morris Almond
18 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 2 Blocks, 3 Turnovers, 3 Fouls, 7-15 FG, 1-2 3FG, 3-3 FT

-Almond bounced back from his poor performance last night by scoring on Kevin Durant consistently throughout this game.
-Almond’s shot was back on today, and he was knocking down shots off of curls from as far out as the NBA three-point line.
-Almond used his jump shots to set up his drives, and got around Durant on numerous occasions for floaters in the paint.
-Almond also showed unbelievable timing, rejecting two shots by anticipating the moves of Seattle’s post players.

Kyrylo Fesenko
9 Points, 8 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 2 Blocks, 2 Turnovers, 5 Fouls, 3-4 FG, 3-6 FT

-Fesenko had a very similar game to the one he had last night.
-Fesenko showed very good hands, which is a very promising sign for a play of his size.
-Fesenko had a couple of great help-side blocks, and would have finished the game with 5 had the officials been less strict.
-Fesenko does a good job of drawing contact, and has above average footwork in the post for a player without a lot of experience.

Seattle

Jeff Green
25 Points, 2 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Steal, 1 Block, 3 Turnovers, 2 Fouls, 6-14 FG, 1-2 3FG, 12-18 FT

-Green has significantly improved his perimeter game since leaving Georgetown.
-Green isn’t going to hit jumpers all day, but he is threat from NBA three-point range.
-Green’s new found versatility allows him to play out of the post and attack the basket with space.
-Green gets to the line at will on this level, drawing contact on almost all of his drives.

Kevin Durant
29 Points, 1 Rebound, 2 Steals, 2 Blocks, 5 Turnovers, 4 Fouls, 7-21 FG, 1-5 3FG, 14-15 FT

-Durant is good enough to play the 2 offensively, but he will give most his production back on the defensive end to the opposing team’s 2.
-Durant is more suited to guard less perimeter oriented players right now, as Morris Almond took advantage of him on a number of occasions.
-Durant just needs to add size in order to be effective defending forwards, and needs to be utilized properly on the defensive end in the future.
-Durant’s shot wasn’t falling tonight, but that didn’t stop him from getting to the line.
-Durant also had one ridiculous highlight, tipping an inbounds pass in from nearly 27 feet away from the hoop.

Will Blalock
5 Points, 4 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 2 Steals, 3 Turnovers, 1 Foul, 1-6 FG, 0-1 3FG, 3-4 FT

-Blalock played well in this game, and has adapted well to his new teammates.
-Blalock may not be the best shooter, but he can knock down jumpers off the dribble and get to the line.
-Blalock showed his versatility by not only distributing the ball well, but tracking down a handful of rebounds.

Johan Petro
7 Points, 6 Rebounds, 1 Block, 4 Turnovers, 6 Fouls, 3-5 FG, 1-2 FT

-Petro gets mentioned here for playing better than teammate Saer Sene.
-Petro showed decent touch on his jumper, hitting a 12 footer in rhythm.
-Petro made it clear that he still needs to work on his hands, dropping a handful of passes.
