Rocky Mountain Revue: Day Five

Rocky Mountain Revue: Day Five
Jul 21, 2006, 07:52 pm
In a surprise start, Aaron Miles leads the Sonics with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to a close 88-86 victory. Robert Swift has a much better game with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Louis Williams and Steven Smith both go off for 21 points and Carney leads a late charge with 15 points.

Darius Washington and Maurice Ager tallied 24 points a piece as the Mavs outrun the Spurs to a 90-81 win. Taquan Dean has his best game with 13 points and 6 rebounds but he still play like point guard. Donta Smith bursts through the curtain he had been hiding behind in a performance that was much more impressive then his 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 21 minutes indicated.

Salim Stoudamire leaves to parts unknown and Marvin Williams doesn't dress, which meant the Hawks lose 77-56 despite Sheldon Williams’ best game of 10 points, 9 rebounds, a steal and a block. The Jazz are lead by another awesome performance by Paul Millsap with 11 points, 12 rebounds, an assist and a steal in 24 minutes of play and Rafael Araujo's best game of the Revue. Also Dee Brown point guard or revisited.

Game 1

Seattle Sonics

Sene still out with his ankle, he looked better walking around. He may play tomorrow.

Robert Swift - He is so much bigger then his opponents and should have dominated this game. But he still showed good footwork and a high release on his jumper. For the first 3 quarters he seemed to be a little off, with several jumpers just rolling off the rim. Despite his newly developed strength and superior size, Swift used finesse moves time and time again in the post fading away into difficult jumper while being guarded by the 6'8” McFarlin. In the 4th quarter he finally found his range and sank several jumpers. He provided a defensive and rebound presence all game long with his activity level and size. He ends with 13 points, 10 rebounds, 6 blocks (I only counted 3), and 2 assists but should have easily scored twenty.

Yotam Halperin -hardly played because of Miles’ presence and Langford's health and recorded no stats besides 4 minutes.

Aaron Miles - is quick footed and has quick hands on defense. He was much more aggressive in driving into the paint or looking for his pull-up jumper. His pull-up jumper goes in but has a strange hitch in the middle. His ability to finish around the hoop using flip shots and good ball fakes has tremendously improved since college. Aaron is a point guard that will setup your offense and ball-hawk the opposing point all night long. He stayed in front of Louis Williams better then any one else, but Williams could stop and shoot right over him. Aaron finished with 14 points, 4 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steal and a blocked shot in 25 minutes. Aaron looked like a decent backup point. I look forward to seeing him play again tomorrow.

Philadelphia 76ers

Rodney Carney -played his normal high speed game. He repeatedly tried to post the smaller Seattle guards with no success but his turnaround jumper over either shoulder looked smooth and polished. In the 2 games he has played this Revue his intensity is much more consistent then his college experience. He defense has been very good and he is effective as a finisher and scorer. In crunch time he scored two big buckets: one a nice right-handed drive and layup over Swift's outstretched hands and the other a deep step back 3 point shot.

Bobby Jones -played but he looked rusty and a little tentative on his sore hamstring. He only tallied 8 minutes one missed field goal, 2 fouls and a turnover.

Louis Williams -had a little bit of trouble with a real 7 footer on the floor in Swift but still was a speedy scoring machine. His speed and control with the ball in the open court with allows him to blow by in each direction. Louis is also an expert in the use of a hesitation dribble and shows excellent ability to maintain his dribble in traffic in the lane. Later in the game he adjusted to Swift's presence working himself into good angles to score high off the glass. He passing still seems mechanical and forced but can usually get the ball where it needs to go. Now that his team is at full strength, his scorers mentality stands out with good scoring options; his shot selection is questionable. He pulled two 20 footers and 3 point shots with more then 15 seconds on shot clock a couple of times. His defense isn't All-NBA but he uses his quick feet and hands to harass his opponents. Louis ended with 21 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and 3 turnovers.

Steven Smith -has an excellent offensive game except for his inconsistent jumper. He uses a variety of quick reverse-pivots, spin-moves and his quick first step to score. Even with a size and strength advantage, Steven uses a game based on quickness. He showed the ability to go coast to coast twice and he worked hard on the boards and in the half court set. Defensively his effort is inconsistent and his footwork is average. He was also very aggressive in fighting for rebounds. If he works on his defense and raises and straightens out his release on his jumpshot, then he would be a excellent small forward for almost any team. Steven ended with 21 points, 10 rebounds, a steal and 3 turnover.

Ivan McFarlin - is the heart and soul of this summer league squad. Offensively his jumper is suspect and he has trouble scoring over the the larger opponents he is matched up against. He has the ability to play great pressure defense and his help defense is superb. His uses his lateral quickness very well. He reminds me of Reggie Evans but with better ball-handling skills. Ivan ended with more floor burns then anyone else, 11 points, 13 rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Game 2
Jose Juan Barea was not with the team.

Dallas Mavericks

Maurice Ager - got his jumper going in the 2nd half and it was pretty. He still isn't quick enough to get to the rim whenever he wants but if catches the defender on a screen or leaning the wrong way, he is an excellent finisher. His jumper is streaky, but when it is going it is pretty and it was good tonight. Defensively he is a solid, tough defender but lacks the great lateral quickness to be a great defender. Maurice end with 24 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu - relentless effort on the boards in the first half that netted some offensive rebounds and some nice finishes. Only played a few minutes at the 2nd, he appeared to pull something at the end of the 1st half. Pops earned 6 points and 3 rebounds tonight.

Rawle Marshall - still not a strong finisher but clever in his use of flip shots and the glass. He is really quick and nimble and can get to paint whenever he wants. He is a surprisingly strong rebounder at both ends of the floor. His outside shot has proven consistent and keeps defenders honest on defending his drives.

Darius Washington - showed some great speed pushing the ball and finishing on the break and dishing the ball. Darius had his best game and most aggressive game getting to the hoop and finishing with his right hand on several different layups. Darius seems to forget he has a left hand when the time comes to finish around the hoop. He makes a few effective passes but he drives to score. Even his full speed drives are under control and he is capable of stopping and burying a little jumper. Darius showed good defensive awareness and stole open court passes several times. Darius's man defense needs a little work but his offensive game might earn him a roster spot somewhere. Darius ended with 24 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 3 steal and 3 turnovers.

San Antonio Spurs

Ian Mahinmi - Continued to show nice form on his jumper, some good quick post moves but no finishes. He has excellent hands and makes himself available by moving towards the hoop. He actively pursues rebounds outside his area. Ian got 5 points, 3 rebounds and 7 fouls in 27 minutes.

Donta Smith - had a good first half by using his athleticism to steal the ball and play good defense. Donta uses his explosive athleticism and long arms on defense to find a moment when the ball is unprotected to dart in and steal the ball. As always he had some excellent dunks and some nice layup to end drive to the basket. He creates opportunities for his teammates by getting into the paint with his explosive first step. If closely pressured, he dribbles with his head down. Donta rarely takes jumpers but he showed a decent jumpshot from 20 feet when he tried. After the first game, Donta played an unselfish game looking to focus on defense first and setting up his teammate second and last to score. Donta was the best setup man on the night for the Spurs. He had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Jamar Smith -his minutes were limited in the first half as the coaching staff gave Lamayn Wilson time. He had one nice crossover. The Spurs know what they and want to see other people tonight.

Taquan Dean -his shot started off tonight like every other night in the Revue. But tonight he kept hustling the ball finally bounced his way and his got a few easy layups. Then his jumper got going and then he was able to get to the hoop. He showed some nice guard skills and good offensive game. But his point guard game was nowhere to be found.

Game 3

Utah Jazz

Rafael Araujo -his best game so far. No one rotated or helped on defense and Hoffa took advantage of the space in the lane by hitting several running hooks and a layup. He also ran the floor hard and earned a couple of easy buckets.. He made 15 jumper look easy. He remained very aggressive on defense but without the dirty or stupid plays. He was given the ball on a fast break in a position he would have charged from last week, but he avoided the charge and tried to lay it in drawing a foul. All in all a very positive step forward against a depleted Hawks team. Hoffa had 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 20 minutes.

Ronnie Brewer - because of the blowout, Brewer only played limited minutes and had his normal good all-around game. He did show more of an ability to work off the ball for both jumpers and opportunities at the hoop. Ronnie had 8 points, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 rebound in 17 minutes.

CJ Miles - CJ's court vision exceeds his ability to pass. He knows people are open and tries to get them the ball but can't get the ball the right spot. He desperately needs to improve his defensive stance and slide to be ready for time on an NBA floor. He is a pretty good rebounder due to his quick 1st and 2nd leaps and long arms. CJ got 4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 turnovers in 19 minutes.

Paul Millsap - Paul is a really nimble big man. He got a offensive rebound and is leaping again to lay it in before most the of players are finished landing. Paul's great hands allow him to control any ball he touches instantaneously. Paul surprised me in the post with a quick fake spin left, a spin back right and jumper for 2. After showing nice form on a jumper earlier the game, Paul continued his personal quest to make me regret the Reggie Evan comparison by burying a 20 foot jumper. Paul has shown excellent touch all revue-long making 17-21 from the free throw line. Millsap ended with 11 points, 12 rebounds, a steal and block.

Dee Brown - played another decent game and made some nice passes. But his assists came on broken plays or teammates hitting perimeter jumpers. After another look Dee doesn't have bad vision and he has excellent passing skills. His ball handling is excellent in the open court. But he lacks the ability to split the defense and keep his dribble. He has trouble driving the lane and not losing control when bumped. He is completely incapable of Steve Nash-like excursion into the lane keeping his dribble and watch for the right moment to shoot or pass. Stated simply Dee is not a penetrator at this time. This is the barrier between Dee and being a good point guard. Dee had 8 points, 6 assists, 1 steal and 2 turnovers.

Atlanta

Marvin Williams DNP, no injury reported.
Salim Stoudamire was not with the team.

Sheldon Williams - best game as well. Still slow but that has worked against Araujo and Whaley. Got a couple of tough rebounds and scored inside. Still is always a step late. Earned 10 points and 9 boards.

Anthony Grundy - ran the team well but his shot was not falling. Good ball handler and keeps his dribble well in traffic. Normally a excellent defender. He got 11 points, 2 assists, 3 steal and 2 rebounds.

Carl Edwards - Over the last two games with some playing time he has shown an excellent ability to finish on the break using the rim to shield his shot. He his also shown a decent stroke from 3 with a slow release. He is solid defender and at 6'5” he would be solid pick for a back SG. Carl got 9 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

Solomon Jones -remained foul prone and passive for much of the game, but every once in while he reminds you of his athleticism with a great block of flying in for a great rebound. He needs to gain 20-30 pounds of muscle and then he would have a fight chancing the league. He is someone to remember and see how improves for next season.
