NBA Training Camp Watch: Central Division

NBA Training Camp Watch: Central Division
Oct 05, 2006, 11:01 pm
A look at the training camp rosters of all five Central Division teams, with an eye on open spots on each roster, and the potential favorites we might see emerge.

Chicago Bulls

Guaranteed Contracts:

Malik Allen
Martynas Andriuskevicius
P.J. Brown
Luol Deng
Chris Duhon
Ben Gordon
Adrian Griffin
Kirk Hinrich
Viktor Khryapa
Andres Nocioni
Thabo Sefolosha
Mike Sweetney
Tyrus Thomas
Ben Wallace

Non-Guaranteed:

Andre Barrett
Eric Chenowith
Scott Merritt
Luke Schenscher
Jeff Varem

Analysis: With 14 guaranteed contracts, the Bulls may or may not be looking to add some more depth to their already extremely deep team. If they decide to go for a 3rd point guard to replace Jannero Pargo, Andre Barrett is the obvious choice, but if its depth at the center position they are after, bringing back incumbent Luke Schenscher makes sense. Schenscher appears to have the inside track early on.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Guaranteed Contracts:

Shannon Brown
Daniel Gibson
Drew Gooden
Larry Hughes
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Luke Jackson
LeBron James
Damon Jones
Donyell Marshall
Ira Newble
Sasha Pavlovic
Scot Pollard
Eric Snow
Anderson Varejao
David Wesley

Non-Guaranteed:

Eddie Basden
Stephen Graham
Brandon Hunter
Ondrej Starosta

Analysis: With 15 fully guaranteed contracts wrapped up, the writing was on the wall for Stevie Graham and Eddie Basden once David Wesley was signed. Basden’s non-guaranteed contract (which becomes fully guaranteed if he’s still around on opening night) was traded to Cleveland by Chicago in return for Martynas Andriuskevicius’ fully guaranteed deal, a move which was strictly a financial one to avoid having to cut and pay the 7-3 Lithuanian. The only hope for Basden and Graham would be to make a tremendous impression on Cleveland’s coaching staff in the month of October and force their hand by waiving Ira Newble. As useless as Newble has been, that seems pretty unlikely considering that he’s still owed 6.5 million dollars over the next two years.

Detroit Pistons

Guaranteed Contracts:

Chauncey Billups
Will Blalock
Dale Davis
Carlos Delfino
Ronald Dupree
Richard Hamilton
Lindsey Hunter
Amir Johnson
Jason Maxiell
Antonio McDyess
Nazr Mohammed
Ronald Murray
Tayshaun Prince
Rasheed Wallace

Non-Guaranteed:

Rick Rickert
Rob Griffin

Analysis: With 14 guaranteed players under contract and two extra bodies brought in as mere unannounced fodder, there will be no suspense at Detroit’s training camp.

Indiana Pacers

Guaranteed Contracts:

Darrell Armstrong
Maceo Baston
Marquis Daniels
John Edwards
Jeff Foster
Danny Granger
Al Harrington
David Harrison
Stephen Jackson
Sarunas Jasikevicius
Rawle Marshall
Jermaine O'Neal
Josh Powell
Jamaal Tinsley
James White
Shawne Williams

Partially Guaranteed Contracts:

Orien Greene ($200,000 guaranteed)
Jimmie Hunter ($100,000 guaranteed)

Analysis: If there is any training camp battle European teams should be following closely, it’s the Indiana Pacers. With 16 players with fully guaranteed contracts already on board (and 18 total), the Pacers will be cutting at least one of the players in the first list and possibly two or three if either Greene or Snap Hunter impress enough in camp. The money that’s already been guaranteed to them means that they can’t be taken lightly in terms of the commitment that’s already been made to them. Josh Powell just became fully guaranteed on the 1st of October, and word out of Indiana is that the Donnie Walsh likes him too much to let him go. Rawle Marshall became fully guaranteed back in August, but he’s a prime candidate to be let go if he doesn’t seriously impress in camp. John Edwards is another name to look out for, as the Pacers already let him walk once. Darrell Armstrong signed a 3 year deal with Dallas before being traded to the Pacers, but only the first year of his contract is fully guaranteed, meaning he’s another prime candidate to be let go if the younger guards manage to beat him out.

Milwaukee Bucks

Guaranteed Contracts:

Charlie Bell
Steve Blake
Andrew Bogut
Dan Gadzuric
Lynn Greer
Ersan Ilyasova
Damir Markota
David Noel
Ruben Patterson
Michael Redd
Bobby Simmons
Brian Skinner
Charlie Villanueva
Mo Williams

Non-Guaranteed:

Ha Seung-Jin

Analysis: Ha Seung-Jin is battling against himself for the 15th and final spot on Milwaukee’s roster, but considering the fact that many teams like to keep that spot open, there is no guarantee he’ll make it. The Bucks could certainly use another big body to give them six fouls off the bench, but based off what Ha showed us at the Las Vegas Summer League, as well as the fact that the Trailblazers decided to cut their ties with their former 2nd round project after investing two years in developing him, even that might be too much to ask from him.

Edit: We've learned that Michael Harris (6-6 combo forward from Rice) and Chris McCray (6-5 shooting guard from Maryland) will also be competing here. Both are intriguing prospects for Europe if they are cut.
