2006 D-League Training Camp Rosters, News
Nov 12, 2006, 02:19 pm
D-League training camps kicked off this weekend and team rosters are beginning to take shape. In addition to the D-League draft, teams also had 4 other routes to supplement their rosters. DraftExpress had a chance to speak to the Director of Operations for the D-League, Chris Alpert, to discuss these routes.

1) Returning Players- Teams returning to the D-League this year are entitled to hold on to the rights of players that were on their roster last year, a maximum of four per team. Key examples from the D-League include Will Conroy, Jamar Smith, Kelenna Azubuike and Luke Schenscher. The three CBA teams who joined the D-League (Dakota Wizards, Idaho Stampede and Sioux Falls Skyforce) were also entitled to return players from their roster last year. Examples include Randy Livingston, Ricky Sanchez, Maurice Baker and David Jackson.

2) Expansion Draft- Teams who were not part of either the D-League or CBA last year (Colorado 14ers, Los Angeles D-Fenders, Bakersfield Jam and the Anaheim Arsenal) participated in an expansion draft to help supplement their rosters. Not all players who were drafted decided to play in the D-League, but still a number of key acquisitions were made. Jawad Williams, Elton Brown, Duane Erwin, Jackie Manuel are a few examples.

3) Allocation- D-League teams can be assigned a maximum of two players with “regional significance to their local market,” according to Chris Alpert. These are usually players who either grew up or played their college ball in the area. Louis Amundson, Olu Famutimi, Jerome Beasley and Jared Reiner are some intriguing names here.

4) Local Tryout Players- D-League teams conducted local tryouts this summer at their facilities to evaluate certain “under the radar” prospects that could be intriguing. If they did not receive the maximum amount of “returning players”—four—they could supplement this number with local tryout players. Chet Mason of the LA D-Fenders is an example.

A fifth route to supplement rosters will come from the “available player pool,” which could include some holdovers who were cut from NBA training camps and have yet to sign with overseas teams. Dijon Thompson for example is a player who is rumored to become available soon. The D-League confidentially decides on their “waiver preference order” and will assign players from the available player pool as they become available.

Despite the fact that the D-League expanded this year from 8 to 12 teams, there still appears to be more depth on the individual rosters than there was last year. Following 10 days of training camp, including some preseason games, teams will cut down their rosters from 16 or 17 players to 10 each. Rosters will be set on November 22nd, and games kick off on Friday, November 24th.

Here are the training camp rosters for all 12 teams:
